River Cities Speedway recap
GRAND FORKS, ND (August 7) - A field of 29 NOSA Sprint Cars were signed in Friday night at River Cities Speedway for University Station/Orchard Oil Night. Mitch Mack, Bob Martin, and Wade Nygaard all picked up heat race wins, while Austin Pierce cruised to the B-main victory.
Mack moved up to the third position on lap two before stealing second away from Martin on lap four. The driver of the Joe Black's Bar & Grill #92 then set his sights on Omdahl's IconHD #0. By this time the leaders were in heavy lapped traffic; and Mack capitalized on it. Mack drove by Omdahl and into the lead on lap eight and never looked back as he led the remaining 13 laps en route to his second victory of the season.
After years of trying, Mack picked up his first career RCS win early this year on July 3rd.
"This one is just as sweet because it lets a guy know that the first one wasn't a fluke," commented Mack in RydellCars.com Victory Lane. "Once we got to lapped traffic I caught up to (Omdahl) pretty quick. Luckily a hole opened up and I took it. After that I just sailed from then on."
Mack says that the key to winning comes down to a lot more than just the car's set up and speed.
"You've got to get up there and be able to ride the cushion and be able to slice and dice, but you've also got to be as smart as you can, as fast as you can, and as patient as you can all at once. It's definitely a tough thing to try to juggle."
The win didn't come easy, however, as Mitch's cousin, Cory Mack, charged from fifth to second and gave Mitch a run for his money in the closing stages. Cory was forced to settle for the runner-up position while Omdahl, Chris Ranten, and Wade Nygaard rounded out the top five.
