Remembering Cory Mack

On Sunday, September 18th, the Sprint Car community lost one of its most exciting, up-and-coming drivers with the passing of Cory Mack. Mack, who was just 23, of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, will be best remembered by race fans and drivers alike for the smile he always brought to the race track and the way he could flat out wheel a Sprint Car.

It seemed as though Cory was more than willing and able to drive his car harder than any of his competitors and could squeeze into spots on the track that most others couldn't. Cory's passion and desire to win led him to two NOSA victories. His first came on September 13th, 2013 at his hometrack, River Cities Speedway, with his other coming on July 18th, 2015 at Buffalo River Race Park in Glyndon, MN. Cory also picked up the Tyler Fedyk Memorial win at Nodak Speedway on September 6th, 2015.

In Cory's final two races, which came earlier this season, he raced to impressive finishes in both events finishing second on July 21st and third on July 22nd, right behind his older brother Casey.

The Northern Outlaw Sprint Association would like to extend their condolences to the entire Mack family. May Cory rest in peace and never be forgotten.

The NOSA Sprints were on the second night of a four night swing for the Buffalo Wild Wings Blazin' Challenge.  Twenty-one cars took the green flag as Dusty Zomer of Sioux Falls, SD led through a couple of early cautions.  Zomer started in the second spot and was working through lapped traffic when on lap 16 he ran into the back of a lapped car to bring out the yellow.  This handed the lead off to Austin Pierce of Grand Forks, ND, who went on the lead the last nine laps to pick up his third career feature win at the Race Park and a sweep of the night.  Casey Mack of East Grand Forks, MN, finished second and Zach Wilde of Thief River Falls, MN, was third.  Jordan Graham of Grand Forks, ND and Zomer got the other heat wins.

GRAND FORKS, ND (September 3) - The Buffalo Wild Wings NOSA Sprint Cars were 26 cars strong for their 25-lap main event. Dusty Zomer sat on the pole with Jade Hastings to his outside. Bobby Martin drove from third to the lead on the opening lap as Hastings filed into second. On lap six, however, Thomas Kennedy drove into the lead and brought Zomer with him into second. Several caution flags slowed the paced throughout the event, but on each Evergreen Insurance restart, Kennedy was able to get his Jamie Moyle 410 up to speed on the cushion and pull away.

Two-time and defending RCS track champion, Austin Pierce, moved into second on lap 11 but slid off the racing surface a couple laps later. Pierce returned to the track before the yellow was displayed, which resulted in an automatic disqualification for Pierce, who entered the night just 15 points out of the lead in the NOSA standings.

Kennedy led the final 19 laps and cruised to his second career win at River Cities and first since August of 2014.

Racing continues Monday evening at River Cities Speedway with NOSA Sprint Cars, NLRA Late Models, Street Stocks, and Lightning Sprints. Fans that purchase a ticket for Monday’s event will receive free admission into Thursday’s (Sept. 8th) Prelude to the Johnny/NLRA Late Model season championship event. Racing starts at 5pm on Monday.

GRAND FORKS, ND (September 2) - The Buffalo Wild Wings Blazin’ Challenge is back and it’s bringing a great opportunity for a lot drivers to walk away with a lot of money. While it still features the $8,200-to-win back row challenge during the John Seitz Memorial, there is a new format in place this year.

A Blazin’ Challenge points series will be established for the next five NOSA races and in order to be one of the qualifiers for the Blazin’ Back Row Challenge on September 9th at River Cites Speedway, drivers must be in the top eight for the Blazin’ Challenge points.

However, winning one of those five races will give drivers an automatic bid into the Back Row Challenge and the remaining qualifiers will be determined by the Blazin’ Challenge points series.

The first of those five events, which will all be $1,500-to-win, kicks off tonight at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks. Night two will be Saturday at Greenbush Race Park in Greenbush, MN, followed by Buffalo River Race Park in Glyndon, MN on Sunday. The final two races will be back at River Cities on Monday, Sept. 5th and Thursday, Sept. 8th.

Race fans that purchase a ticket for the Monday night program in Grand Forks will receive FREE admission into Thursday night’s “Prelude to the Johnny”.

Refer to the graphic below for complete Blazin’ Back Row Challenge details, payouts, etc.

Wade Nygaard will bring a slim five point lead into this weekend’s racing action over two-time NOSA Champion, Casey Mack. Also within striking distance is 2014 series champion, Austin Pierce.

Start Times:
Sept. 2 - River Cities: 7pm
Sept. 3 - Greenbush: 7pm
Sept. 4 - Buffalo River - 6pm
